Sports Arena Flooring

1. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Vinyl Flooring:

  • Composition: composed of multiple PVC layers with a wear layer on top.
  • Benefits: Offers excellent dimensional stability, good shock absorption, and a variety of surface textures for optimal traction in different sports. Easy to clean and maintain.
  • Applications: Suitable for a wide range of sports, including basketball, volleyball, badminton, and fitness areas.

Installation Layers (PVC Vinyl Flooring):

  • Subfloor: A level, clean concrete slab is essential for a stable base. Unevenness can be corrected with a self-levelling compound.
  • Moisture Barrier: A vapour barrier prevents moisture transmission from the subfloor to the vinyl flooring, protecting against warping and mould growth.
  • Padded Underlayment: An optional layer of shock-absorbing foam or rubber provides additional comfort and reduces impact on athletes’ joints.
  • PVC Vinyl Flooring: The final layer is the interlocking PVC tiles, secured together with a click-lock system for a seamless surface.

2. Polypropylene Interlocking Tiles:

  • Composition: Constructed from durable, lightweight polypropylene plastic.
  • Benefits: affordable, easy to install and maintain, and offers good shock absorption. Provides a water-resistant and slip-resistant surface.
  • Applications: Ideal for temporary installations, practice courts, and multi-purpose spaces.

Installation (Polypropylene Interlocking Tiles):

  • Subfloor Preparation: Ensure the subfloor is clean, level, and free of debris.
  • Tile Installation: Simply interlock the tiles together using their integrated connection system. No adhesive is required.

3. SES (Shock-Absorbing Elastic System) Interlocking Tiles:

  • Composition: multi-layered construction with a top layer of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and a shock-absorbing EVA foam base.
  • Benefits: Excellent shock absorption for high-impact sports minimises joint stress and provides a comfortable playing surface. Easy to install and maintain.
  • Applications: Primarily used for high-impact sports like basketball, volleyball, and fitness areas.

Installation (SES Interlocking Tiles):

  • Subfloor Preparation: Similar to polypropylene tiles, ensure a clean, level, and debris-free subfloor.
  • Tile Installation: Interlock the tiles using their integrated connection system. The EVA foam base provides a natural locking mechanism.

4. Maple Wood Flooring:

  • Composition: The traditional choice, made from high-quality North American maple hardwood for superior strength and stability.
  • Benefits: Provides a classic aesthetic, excellent shock absorption, and energy return for optimal athletic performance. Offers a natural, non-slip surface.
  • Applications: Primarily used for professional basketball courts, high school gymnasiums, and dance floors.

Installation Layers (Maple Wood Flooring):

  • Subfloor preparation requires a precise, level concrete slab with a moisture barrier to prevent warping.
  • Sleepers: Wooden sleepers (beams) are secured to the subfloor, creating a level foundation for the wooden floorboards.
  • Moisture Barrier: Similar to PVC vinyl flooring, a vapour barrier protects the wood from moisture damage.
  • Maple Flooring Panels: Tongue-and-groove maple panels are secured to the sleepers using nails or staples, creating a seamless wooden surface.
  • Sanding and Finishing: The installed floor is sanded smooth and finished with multiple coats of sealant for protection and optimal playing performance.

Choosing the Right Sports Arena Flooring:

The ideal flooring choice depends on several factors, including:

  • Primary Sport(s): Different sports have varying requirements for shock absorption, traction, and surface hardness.
  • Budget: Costs vary between material types and installation complexity.
  • Durability and Maintenance: Consider the expected traffic volume and desired lifespan when making your selection.

By understanding the different types of sports arena flooring and their installation processes, you can make an informed decision that prioritises both performance and safety for your athletes.
